cardiovascular-technology-degreesCardiovascular technologists and technicians are allied health professionals who work with heart patients, employing specialized training and skills in order to help doctors diagnose and treat disorders of the heart or blood vessels through reviewing medical records, examining and monitoring patients, performing procedures such as EKG's, Ultrasounds, or assisting physicians with cardiac catheterization.

Cardiovascular techs also operate and care for sophisticated cardiac testing equipment, explain test procedures to patients, draw blood samples if needed, measure, analyze, and image the heart, and help interpret test results. Doctors depend on the results of these tests to determine the presence and extent of heart disease and as the basis for prescribing therapy if needed.

Cardiovascular technologists can specialize in any of three areas of practice: invasive cardiology, echocardiography, or vascular technology.

1. Invasive Cardiology – assisting the physician with all aspects of cardiac catheterization from cardiovascular diagnostics to interventional procedures such as balloon angioplasty and pacemakers.

2. Echocardiography (Cardiac Ultrasound) – the use of ultrasound to image the valves, chambers, vessels, blood flow and motion of the heart.

3. Vascular Ultrasound – imaging and evaluating blood flow in the arteries and veins throughout the body, screening for blockages and narrowing.

Noninvasive Cardiovascular Technicians may specialize in electrocardiograms (EKG Technicians), Holter monitors, and stress testing. EKG technicians with advanced training perform Holter monitor and stress testing.

Cardiovascular Technologist Salary Range

Cardiovascular Technology is a vibrant, challenging, and rewarding career field that offers excellent opportunities for employment in hospitals, specialty clinics, outpatient centers, and diagnostic labs. Generally speaking, a typical cardiovascular tech salary averages at around $47,000 annually. With additional training and experience, advanced cardiovascular technologists earn a median salary around $75,000 or more per year.

Cardiovascular Technologist Education Requirements

Cardiovascular Technologist training programs average two years, although they may be one to four years depending on previous experience and specialty area chosen. The curriculum includes use of specific high-technology equipment, normal and abnormal cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, electrophysiology, hemodynamic monitoring, sterile technique, radiation safety, patient care techniques, and clinical practicums.
